WAVERLY — Owego had a rough opening series at the Section IV Division 2 Boys Bowling State Qualifier at Valley Bowling Center here Thursday, placing third overall.
The River Hawks led a close three-way battle after the class sectionals last week, but fell behind two-time defending champion Waverly and Maine-Endwell following the morning session at the qualifier.
Owego started the day with a 2939 while M-E shot 3336 and the Wolverines scored 3313. That put the Spartans in front with a 6-game total of 6454, 75 pins ahead of Waverly. Meanwhile, the River Hawks would carry a 6086 into the afternoon session.
Waverly posted a 3155 over the final three games to win the team title for the third straight year posting a 9-game total of 9534. M-E rolled a 3045 and finished with a 9499 with Owego closing out its season with a 3076 and a 9162 final score.
Connor Kotski would lead the River Hawks with a 1933 series, recording a 608 and 677 at the qualifier to go with a 648 from sectionals. He missed landing a spot on the section's state tournament Composite team by one spot.
Evan O’Hara shot 589 and 637, combining with a 668 at sectionals for an 1894 total.
Grayden Stanton, who had a 627 at sectionals, registered a 585 and 605 to finish up at 1817.
Devan Card followed a 632 sectional score with a 628 and 539 for a 1799 overall score.
Grayson Quick ended his season with a 618 afternoon series, adding to a 529 in the morning and 572 at sectionals for a 1719 total.
