WHITNEY POINT — Austin Green's 3-pointer late in the game gave Newark Valley the lead for good in a back-and-forth, 36-33, win over Whitney Point here Friday night in IAC Large School crossover boys basketball action.

The win snaps a five-game losing skein for the Cardinals, who improve to 3-5 on the season.

"We made some mistakes down the stretch finishing the game, but did enough to hang on," said Newark Valley coach Scott Stratton.

Tim Wojtysiak scored four points in the first quarter, and Green drained a 3-pointer to help the Cardinals to a 9-4 lead after the first eight minutes.

Whitney Point used an 8-5 spurt in the second quarter to close the gap to 14-12 at the half.

Wojtysiak canned a 3-pointer and scored seven points in the third quarter, but the Eagles used a 12-9 advantage in the stanza to take a 24-23 lead into the final eight minutes.

Anthony Dougher, who have seven points in the fourth quarter, and Wojtysiak each knocked down 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter, but Whitney Point maintained a 33-31 lead heading into the final minute.

Green's 3-pointer made it 34-33, and Dougher added a bucket on a putback on the offensive glass to provide the final margin.

Wojtysiak led the Cardinals with 17 points, including three 3-pointers, while Dougher scored 13 points and Green added six points.

Newark Valley returns to action Tuesday at Trumansburg.
