H.S. WRESTLING: SVEC'S VAOW REACHES PODIUM AT SOUTHERN TIER MEMORIAL (13 PHOTOS) (2025-01-11)

ELMIRA — Junior Rodney Vaow was one of four SVEC wrestlers to reach Day 2 of the Southern Tier Memorial wrestling tournament Saturday, and was the only one to reach the podium.

Chambersburg (Pa.) won the team title with 193 points, edging runner-up Bellefonte Area (Pa.) by 3.5 points in the 38-team field.

Penns Valley (Pa.) was third with 167 points, St. Anthony's was fourth with 137.5 points, and Waverly was fifth with 135 points. Tioga finished 10th with 103.5 points, SVEC was 22nd with 50 points, and Owego was 24th with 44 points.

Vaow, who was 4-1 Friday, was 1-2 Saturday to place sixth in the 131-pound weight class.

Vaow opened Saturday with a 10-0 major decision win over Athens junior Lucas Persun.

In the consolation semifinals, Vaow dropped a 14-2 major decision to Dylan Depew-Cappadonia of Canisteo-Greenwood.

In the fifth-place match, Penns Valley's Tripp Watson pinned Vaow in 1:45.

Freshman John-Michael Bohling lost his only bout of the day via fall to Horseheads' Connor McAllister in 1:51 in the "blood round" of the 101-pound bracket.

Freshman Brennan Zimmer lost via technical fall to St. Anthony's Justin Castillo

Junior Kamren Westbrook lost his only bout Saturday, falling to Owego sophomore Dylan Brace in 4:18 in the "blood round" of the 138-pound weight class.

SVEC returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Edison.
