HS WRESTLING: OWEGO CLAIMS SEVEN TOP-FIVE SPOTS AT RIVER HAWK ROUND ROBIN (2025-01-11)

OWEGO — The Owego wrestling team garnered five fourths and two fifths on its home mats at the River Hawk Round Robin tournament here Saturday.

Vitaliy Sirotkin (101 pounds), Robert Curley (108), John Cornwell (131), Jonathan Gilliland (145) and Lucas Boccasini (190) all placed fourth while Landon Boccasini (108) and Trevor Monell (215) took fifth.

Sirotkin decisioned Vestal’s Raf Haque, 10-7, and Johnson City’s Bryan Brazinski, 6-0, but lost by fall to Baldwinsville’s Zach Boudreau, already a 30-match winner this season, and South Seneca’s Harley Wilkins in 44 and 55 seconds, respectively.

Curley pinned Joshua Sabin of Whitney Point in 1:42, teammate Landon Boccasini in 40 seconds and Oneonta’s Maecean Champen in 1:45. He lost by fall to Maddox Hubbard of Chenango Forks in 5:35 and to Oneonta’s Marshall Mahar in 3:36. Hubbard was a Division I state qualifier last season.

Cornwell pinned Logan Davis from Newark Valley in 3:44, then lost by fall to Amari Champen of Oneonta in 5:15 before dispatching Baldwinsville’s Jack Webb in 5:26. Brockport’s Richard Wood, a NYSPHSAA Division I bronze medalist last season, pinned Cornwell in 27 seconds, setting up a rematch between the Owego grappler Champen, who won again, but only by a 4-2 verdict this time.

Gilliland got going by pinning Scotty Darling of Vestal in 45 seconds, rolling to an 18-0 tech fall over Moravia’s Levi McDonald, then pinning Elmira’s Hunter Cleary in 1:39. In the semifinals, he dropped a 20-5 tech fall to Florida state place-winner Preston Lindsay from Coral Springs Charter School. In the consolation finals, Gilliland dropped a high-scoring 16-15 heartbreaker to Baldwinsville’s Brendan Fredenburg.

Lucas Boccasini pinned Deposit/Hancock’s Ty Rynearson in 1:34), then scored a 14-1 major decision over Shazyar Rashid of Vestal and a 20-4 tech fall against Liberty’s Tarek Benadim. He lost by fall in 3:37 to Evan Trusdale from Chenango Forks, then dropped an overtime heartbreaker to Liberty’s Shawn Bickham, falling 2-1.

Landon Boccasini decked Whitney Point’s Joshua Sabin in 5:02, then lost to Curley by pin in 40 seconds. After suffering a 15-0 technical fall loss to Brennan Kline of Baldwinsville he dispatched Isaac Rumsey of Schuyler in 4:55 and South Seneca’s Dominic Limner in 3:38.

Monell dumped Vestal’s Edward Koskey in 3:45 to start the day, but lost by pin to Deposit/Hancock’s Landen Bailey in 2:38 and by a 21-6 tech fall to Kenyon Davidson of Johnson City. He rallied back to dispatch Romeo Rojas of Vestal in 1:51 and Elmer Son Vicente from Liberty in 1:19.

Gabriel Zervos placed eighth at 131, going 1-4, and Anthony Neumuth was 1-3 to take 10th at 285. Logan Rose (124) was 12th, suffering an injury in his second bout.

Owego heads to Canandaigua Friday for the Bradshaw Invitational.
