IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY FENDS OFF NOTRE DAME IN SECOND HALF OF 58-55 WIN (2025-01-07)

SOUTHPORT, N.Y. — Newark Valley built a 13-point halftime lead, then held on for a 58-55 win over Notre Dame here Tuesday night in IAC South Large School Division girls basketball action.
“It's a good road win against a good team," said Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger.
"I thought the girls put together a solid, complete game.
"We had great defensive effort and a nice balanced offense tonight," added Schweiger.
Adrianna Rich scored six points in the first quarter, and Livia Short added four points to lead the Cardinals to a 17-12 lead after the first eight minutes.
Aubrey Kwiatkowski scored six points in the second quarter, while Rich and Adriana Finta added four points apiece in a 16-8 that upped the lead to to 33-20 at the halftime intermission.
Kwiatkowski scored five points in the third quarter, and Rich added four points, but Notre Dame's Payton Sutryk scored seven points to spark a 19-13 Crusader run that closed the gap to 46-39 heading into the final eight minutes.
Finta scored seven points in the fourth quarter as the Cardinals held on for the win.
NV made it difficult on itself in the fourth quarter, making just 2 of 10 free throws in the stanza. For the game, the Cardinals were 4 of 17.
Finta led Newark Valley with 16 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while Rich had 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, and five steals, and Kwiatkowski had 14 points, four assists, and three steals.
Livia Short added eight points, 10 rebounds, three steals, and four blocked shots, while Kam Short chipped in with four points and three blocked shots, Haven Aylesworth grabbed four rebounds.
Sutryk led all scorers with 22 points for the Crusaders, and Leah O'Connell added 15 points.
Newark Valley, now 7-3, returns to action Friday when it hosts Whitney Point.
