NEWFIELD — Ninth-seeded Newark Valley scored two goals in the final five minutes, including the game-winner with 30 seconds remaining, to rally for a 3-2 win over eighth-seeded Newfield here Wednesday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Section IV, Class C boys soccer playoffs.
"It was a tale of two halves," said Newark Valley coach Mitch Thurston.
"Newfield used its size and strength to force seven corners and score their two goals," he noted.
"Newark Valley used its skills and possession to force 10 second-half shots," added Thurston.
Newark Valley's Elijah Williams netted a first-half goal, but the Cardinals trailed 2-1 at the intermission, thanks to goals by Newfield's Greg Taylor and Benjamin Little.
The Trojans maintained a one-goal advantage until Bela Krenner found the back of the net with 5 minutes remaining to tie the game at 2-2.
Williams netted the game-winner with 30 seconds remaining to send the Cardinals into a semi-final match-up at top-seeded Trumansburg Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Aaron Smith had one assist for the Cardinals.
Newfield had a 15-12 edge in shots-on-goal, and an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
