(UPDATED) STAC BOYS BASKETBALL: M-E RALLIES TO DOWN OWEGO (2019-01-09)  Tioga County Sports ReportENDWELLÂ - Owego watched a potential victory slip away as a pair of M-E underclassmen highlighted a 57-55 come-from-behind victory in STAC Metro action here Wednesday. "(We) did not execute well in the last minute. That's on me," Owego head coach Chris Evans said. "We didn't play well, but we played well enough to win; however, for a number of reasons, it didn't happen." With the Spartans trailing by nine in the fourth quarter, M-E freshman Michael Mancini nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the lead to 50-47, although Owego's Kobe Bogart turned an offensive rebound into a trey to put the Indians up 53-47. M-E's Jack McFadden converted a traditional 3-point play and sank two foul shots, all in less than 35 seconds, to close the gap to 55-54 with 40 seconds remaining in the game. Owego missed a pair of free throws in the final moments then, with 10.6 seconds on the clock, McFadden sank another pair of free throws to put M-E on top, 56-55. Mancini added one with 1.2 seconds to go to make it 57-55. McFadden was the one player the Indians didn't want to send to the charity stripe. He went 12-for-13 on the night and went on to finish with a game-high 30 points. The Indians got off to a 10-2 lead to start the game, but M-E regrouped and trailed 14-12 heading into the second quarter. Owego led 30-25 at the half. Bogart paced the Indians with 23 points, Christian Sage had 10 and Robert Merrill added nine. Evan Hamed and Mike Wasyln scored five apiece, and Isaiah Bishop had three. "Now it's time to put our 'big boy pants' on and work through it. We have to get right back at it tonight." True. Owego (8-2, 4-2) won't have any time to dwell on what could have been as it hosts Corning this evening. |
