SECTION IV INDOOR TRACK & FIELD: OWEGO'S WATKINS WINS 1,000 AT QUINNEY INVITE (2019-01-05)

CORTLAND - Gavin Watkins captured first place honors in the 3200-meter run at the Quinney Invitational at SUNY Cortland Friday. He posted a time of 10:47.23, taking the STAC division race by just under 2 1/2 seconds ahead of Elmira's Mariano Casciotti.
Watkins also ran the anchor leg of the 4x800 relay, which placed second behind Elmira. The quartet of Joel Choynowski, Eaan Hackett, James McDonald and Watkins came in seeded fourth, but trimmed nearly 16 seconds off their seed time with a 9:34.84.
Hackett had another runner-up showing, clocking 4:55.78 in the 1600.
The Indians also collected a pair of third-place finishes as Lewis Race clocked 1:32.35 in the 600, and teamed with Derek Sarrge, Cameron Szabo and Nate Bowers in the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:49.12.
Sarrge was seventh in the 300 with a time of 41.14 seconds, James McDonald was ninth in the 1600 in 5:08.27, and the 4x200 relay of Gavin Bowers, Jaden Buckingham, August Cantella and Brandon Worzel were 10th with a 2:02.27.
Other competitors for the boys team were Cantella, 12th in the 55 dash (7.16); Dylan Pitcher, 19th in the 600 (1:50.76); Jaden Buckingham, 20th in the long jump (14-0); Worzel, 36th in the 55 dash (8.42); and Logan Mead, 39th in the 300 (53.26).
The Indians were sixth of 15 STAC teams and 13th of 38 squads overall.
GIRLS
Lilly Bouton led the Owego ladies with a fourth in the 55 hurdles in 11.19 seconds. She was also 13th in the 55 dash in 8.42 seconds.
Alyssa Stephens took seventh in the 3,000, clocking 13:28.3, and Jenna Hunsinger was seventh in the 1500 in 5:43.44.
The Indians also placed fifth in the 4x800 relay with a 12:31.79 and sixth in the 4x400 relay in 5:24.33 (names were unavailable).
Also competing were Carmen Jorgensen, 12th in the long jump (11-2 1/4) and 25th in the 55 dash (8.78); Danielle Knapp, 16th in the 1500 (6:11.13); Ella Reig, 19th in the 1,000 (4:03.77); Lily Harbor, 21st in the 1,000 (4:13.74); and Kiara Smith, 26th in the shot put (19-6).
Owego is off until the Hurley Invitational Jan. 18 at Ithaca College.
