The Sports ReportsWith the girls’ swimming and diving season in the books, there were some performances that we may never see again.
The Sports Reports All-Region “Swimmer of the Year” Angie McKane had the type of career that may never be duplicated in Section IV.
McKane was the outstanding performer at the NYSPHSAA Championships, but on top of that she was also the “Scholar-Athlete of the Year” winner. It’s a duo of honors that are rarely, if ever, seen in the state.
McKane, who is a West Point commit, won both the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly state and federation titles this year. She earned automatic All-American honors in both events. She broke her own school and Section IV records in both events.
For good measure, McKane also made states in the 400 free relay with the Hawks this season.
For her career, McKane is a five-time state champion, and three-time federation champion. She won the 100 fly title each of the past three seasons.
While McKane wrapped up her spectacular career, teammate Brooke Terwilliger also wrapped up a career to remember, and she is The Sports Reports All-Region “Diver of the Year.“
Terwilliger was a state runner-up for the Hawks. She won the Section IV, Class A title this year and broke the Elmira pool record, while winning sectionals. She earned her third career state medal this year.
The Hawks senior is a D1 commit to dive at Toledo.
While McKane and Terwilliger are wrapping up their careers, Waverly’s Megan Atanasoff is a 7th-grader just starting her career.
Atanasoff is The Sports Reports All-Region “Newcomer of the Year.” She was part of Waverly state-qualifying 200-yard freestyle relay.
The seventh-grader was part of a school and Waverly pool record in the 200 free relay, as well as the Elmira Invite Champion in the event.
Atanasoff is the fastest 7th-grader in school history in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.94 and the 100 free in 59.06. She was one of the top point-winners for the Wolverines this year.

Mira Kittle, Waverly: Kittle established new school records in the 50 and 100 free, as well as the 100 back, and is within striking distance of the 100 fly record. She also swam on record-breaking 200 medley and 200 free relays. She place eighth in the 50 free at States, after taking 2nd in the prelims. Kittle set several meet and pool records throughout Section IV during the season.
Olivia Cheresnowsky, Waverly: Cheresnowsky won the 50 yard free at the Section IV, Class B Championships, and was second in the 100-yard backstroke. She also swam on the 200 free relay that won a gold medal at sectionals and qualified for States, and was on the first-place 200 medley relay that lowered its school record.
Kaelyn Katchuk, Owego: Katchuk was the Class B diving champion, set a section IV record at 346.45 in six dives and had a 558.8, which is second best in Section IV history behind the scores by Corning’s Brooke Terwilliger. She placed at the State Championships.
Sophia Lee, Owego: Lee won the Class B title in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:03.07, and was the leading points-winner for the Lake Hawks.
Sibby Lowe, Horseheads: Lowe was a state qualifier in four events. A state medalist as part of the 200 free relay for the Blue Raiders, she also made states in the 50 free, 100 fly, and 200 medley relay. Lowe won the 50 free Class A title.
Gabby Janeski, Horseheads: Janeski was a State medalist as part of the 200 free relay, and was also a state qualifier in the 200 medley relay. She was a runner-up in the 100 breaststroke at sectionals.
Anna Lowe, Horseheads: Lowe was a state medalist as part of the 200 free relay, was also a state medalist in the 200 medley relay. She was a sectional runner-up in the 50 free.
Cella McLaughlin, Corning: McLaughlin was a state qualifier in diving, and was a Section IV, Class A runner-up in the event.
Kara Peters, Corning: Peters was part of a state-qualifying relay for the Hawks, and
finished second in Class A in the 200 free, and third in the 500 free.
SECOND TEAM
Evelyn Panek, Athens: Panek placed third in the 50 free, and eighth in the 100 free at the District 4 Championships.
Makenna Robbins, Wellsboro: Robinson placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke, and sixth in the 200 IM at the District 4 Championships.
Madison Robbins, Wellsboro: Robbins placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke, and eighth in the 50 free at the District 4 Championships.
Isobel Anderegg, Wellsboro: Anderegg placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke, and sixth in the 100 free at the District 4 Championships.
Karina Lapierre, Horseheads: A state qualifier in the 200 medley relay, Lapierre placed third in the 100 back, and fifth in the 500 free at the Class A Championships.
Mia Carro, Horseheads: A state medalist as part of the 200 free relay for Horseheads, Carro placed fifth in the 200 IM at Sectionals.
Madelyn Cavalier, Elmira: Cavalier placed fifth in the 100 fly and eighth in the 100 backstroke at Sectionals.
Maria Kuksenkova, Corning: A relay state qualifier for Corning, Kuksenkova placed fifth in the 100 free at Sectionals.
Kyra Gross, Corning: A relay state qualifier for Corning, Gross placed sixth in the 100 free and seventh in the 50 free at Sectionals.
Genevieve Carro, Horseheads: Carro placed third in the 100 breaststroke, and fourth in the 200 free at the Section IV Championships.
Cecilia Clair, Owego: Clair was part of a 200-yard medley relay that went 2:03.49 this year — third-best in the area, and a 200 free relay that went 1:51.51 — fourth-best.
Olivia Thompson, Athens: Thompson was part of a 400 free relay team that placed third at Districts. She placed seventh in the 100 back.
Olivia Schrader, Owego: Schrader placed fifth in Class B in the 100 breaststroke.
