STAC BASEBALL: STRONG START PROPELS OWEGO PAST SUS VALLEY IN SEASON OPENER (2024-03-26)

CONKLIN — Conlan Taylor struck out 11 batters and Owego grabbed a six-run advantage en route to an 8-3 season-opening victory over Susquehanna Valley in STAC baseball action Tuesday.
The junior fireballer surrendered one hit and walked two over four innings.
The River Hawks scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, then tacked on four more in the fifth.
Sus Valley got a pair of runs back in its half of the fifth, but Owego increased its lead to 8-2 with a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.
Each team had six hits while the defense committed one error apiece.
Elijah Lewis went 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and a walk; and Connor Kotski was 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Lewis stole a page out of Ben Rollison’s playbook, stealing three bases. Rollison, who led the state in thefts last season, smacked a triple and scored a run.
Talan Schumacher chipped in with a hit and two RBI; Evan English added a run and RBI; Taylor helped his own effort with a run, a stolen base and a pair of walks; and Joseph Palladino had a run, a stolen base, walked and was hit by a pitch.
Zach Beyer helped out with a run and a walk, and Jack Buchsbaum added a run.
Kam Wicklund scattered five hits over three innings of relief, fanning two, giving up three runs, two earned, and walking one.
Dylan Root had half of the Sabers’ hits, going 3-for-4 with a double, a pair of runs, and two stolen bases. Quinitn Bowman drove in two runs.
Owego hosts Windsor Thursday at 5 p.m.
