STAC WRESTLING: FORFEITS THE DIFFERENCE MAKER IN OWEGO LOSS TO SUS VALLEY (2023-12-07)

OWEGO — Owego surrendered 18 points via forfeit in a 42-30 STAC wrestling loss to Susquehanna Valley Thursday evening.
The River Hawks won five of the nine contested bouts, but needed six more team points to win the dual meet via tie-breaker. It didn’t happen as Colin Trotter, a third-year grappler, won by fall over rookie Mathew Samuelson in 24 seconds at 145 pounds. Samuelson weighed in more than nine pounds lighter than his opponent.
The match started at 152 with the River Hawks’ Jon Gillialnd recording a fall in 3:03, but Sus Valley’s Zach Lamantia (160) scored a pin against Vincenzo Mauriello in 3:17 to tie the team score at six.
Owego’s Bobby Struble decked Kade Bailey in 3:51 at 170 to make it 12-6. Struble took a 5-4 edge into the second period, but built a 12-4 cushion with a takedown and five near fall points.
The Sabers’ Trent Rose (190) and Trey Parker (215) registered pins in 5:30 and 24 seconds, respectively, over John Swackhammer and Jaydin Brainard to give the visitors their first lead at 18-12.
Owego 285-pounder Trevor Decker would knot the score at 18 apiece by dispatching Michael McCracken in 2:34.
There was no bout at 101, but Sus Valley took control of the match would three consecutive forfeit wins at 108, 116 and 124, giving itself a 36-18 cushion.
In the only other bout to reach the third period, the River Hawks’ Dylan Brace (131) pinned Kaiden Terry in 5:24.
Colin Monell (138) denied Mark Moelder his 50th career win with a fall in 1:04. The Owego junior was down, 5-2, before scoring a reversal prior to the pin.
The River Hawks visit Waverly Wednesday. Owego’s JV wrestlers will compete in the Tioga Round Robin tournament Saturday.
