
WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. — Spencer-Van Etten’s John Garrison and Owego’s Jaelyn Chrysler were the top Section IV finishers at the New York State Federation Cross Country Championships Saturday.
Garrison placed 19th with a time of 16:40.1. A senior, he finished ninth at the NYSPHSAA Class D championships Nov. 11.
The competitors placing 11th through 24th were separated by less than 10 seconds.
Tri-Valley junior Van Furman, who won the Class D race at the NYSPHSAA championships, was the overall winner in a field of 287 runners.
Chrysler placed 49th out of 287 runners, posting a time of 20:07. She edged out Niskayuna senior Mary Kate Cestaro (20:07.8) and sophomore Danielle List from Albertus Magnus (20:08.8) to finish in the top 50.
It was the second Federation meet for the River Hawk sophomore, who took 89th out of 285 competitors as an 8th-grader in 2021 with a time of 20:25.7.
William Floyd junior Zariel Macchia was the top girl, winning with a time of 17:59.4.
Other Section IV runners included Lansing’s Trent Thibault (40th, 16:55.9) and Marathon’s Andrew Edsall (133rd, 17:57) in the boys race, and Gretel Hilson-Schneider of Delhi/South Kortright (212th, 22:48.5) in the girls event.
