NEWARK VALLEY — The resurgent Moravia field hockey team inched closer to securing a Section IV playoff berth with an 8-1 victory over Newark Valley Thursday.

The Blue Devils improved to 6-3 and are just one win away from qualifying for the sectional playoffs with sven games remaining.

Maive Green recorded a hat trick for Moravia while Jordan Smith contributed two goals and an assist. Brooke Proper chipped in with a goal and an assist, and Kendall Hess and Alyssa Palmer added one goal each. Gabby Heim had an assist.

Malloy Chapman scored for the Cardinals in the first period.

Moravia took 30 shots to NV’s one and held a 6-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Grace Guiles made 20 saves in goal for the Cardinals.

Newark Valley (0-11) visits defending Class B state champion Vestal (9-1) Monday.
