Tioga County Sports ReportNEWARK VALLEY — Lexi Cheeseman recorded a hat trick as Owego won its second straight game Tuesday, defeating Newark Valley, 5-1 in Section IV field hockey action.
The victory moved the River Hawks above .500 at 5-4 on the season.
MaKenzie Comparetta scored Owego’s first goal with 1:23 remaining in the first quarter. Gabriella Boehme contributed an assist.
Cheeseman scored the next two goals for the Hawks, scoring with 12:47 left in the second period and 11:20 to go in the third. Ava Brown picked up an assist on Cheeseman’s last goal.
NV got on the board with a goal by Kayden Rockwell at 2:09 of the third stanza.
Amelia Sherman scored her first varsity goal with 2:35 to play in the game, then Cheesman recorded her hat trick goal with eight ticks on the clock.
The Hawks grabbed a 24-2 advantage in shots and led 7-3 in penalty corners.
Grace Guiles made 20 saves for the Cardinals and Dakota Callahan had two defensive saves. RaeAnn Craft had one save for the Hawks.
On Thursday, Owego hosts Marathon and NV hosts Moravia.
