IAC BOYS SOCCER: NEWARK VALLEY DROPS OT HEARTBREAKER TO US/PB (2023-09-27)

NEWARK VALLEY — The Newark Valley boys soccer team has been involved in five games this season which have been decided by a single goal.

Tuesday marked the second consecutive day that the Cardinals came up short in overtime, falling to Union Springs/Port Byron, 1-0. They fell to Odessa-Montour, 2-1, in the extra session Monday.

Against US/PB both teams took several shots on goal but were either off the mark or the goalkeepers were up to the task in making the stops.

Marbel Perez scored on a cross from George Fearon in as the clock neared the midway point of the 10-minute OT period.

NV took 14 shots to US/PB’s 11, but the Wolves held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

The US/PB keeper made 14 saves and two NV keepers combined for 11.

In the loss to Odessa-Montour, Will Craparo tallied for NV on a cross from James Wales with 5:29 left in the first half to tie the game and ultimately force overtime.

The Grizzlies received a pair of goals from Patrick Croft. He tallied the initial score at 21:14 of the first half, then nailed the game winner with 7:39 left in overtime.

O-M held a 13-9 edge in shots and both teams attempted five corner kicks. Last Thursday, NV defeated Watkins Glen, 4-1, for its second straight win.

Craparo and Wales registered two goals and one assist apiece, and Zach Brodfuehrer tacked on an assist.

The Cardinals took 11 shots to Watkins' six and held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Josh Benjamin made four saves for NV and Caleb Bresett had nine for the Lake Hawks.
