WEBSTER — For Kaelyn Katchuk the goal for states remained the same as last year — stay consistent. Doing that also led to another big accomplishment for the sophomore — a state medal.

The Owego standout posted a score of 474.60 to earn a 10th place medal at states. Katchuk was consistent throughout the day, sitting in the top 10 after the prelims, the semis and the final.

“My goals are always the same, to stay consistent and have everything be quality diving,” Katchuk said.

In the prelim round Katchuk sat in sixth place with a score of 233.30. After the semifinals she moved up to fifth at 358.85, before finishing 10th after the final.

Katchuk was one of two state medalists for Section 4, as Corning’s Brooke Terwilliger was eighth at 483.20.

The Owego diver was happy to be at the state meet for a second straight season.

“Lots of fun, I’m getting to see some people I haven’t seen in a while so it’s nice to talk to them,” Katchuk said.

Diving at the Webster Aquatic Center, instead of Ithaca where states was last year, meant a day off school yesterday to travel down a day early and get used to the diving boards.

“We came down, I got to skip a day of school, so we came down and had an afternoon warmup session,” Katchuk said.

The whole experience of staying out of town for a high school meet was something new for the sophomore.

“I haven’t stayed overnight for a trip for the high school season yet,” she said. “So, this is a first, it’s been fun.”
