NEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley scored first, then traded the lead with SVEC four times before pulling out a 6-4 IAC baseball victory here Wednesday.
A walk by NV's Sam Durand and single by Brenton Rosenberg set up Joey Sherwood's RBI single in the bottom of the second.
In the third, a single by Cody Sayre, walk to Logan Jewell, an error and a Jayden Grube ground out put the Eagles in the lead, 2-1.
The Cardinals countered in their half of the third as walks to Luke Rinkavage and Durand wrapped around a base hit by Mikey Wandell tied the game, and an RBI double from Rosenberg made it 3-2.
SVEC responded with two more runs in the fourth. Dylan Austin walked and scored on a Kameron Smith base hit, and Smith scored on a wild pitch to put the Eagles up, 4-3.
Not to be outdone, NV scored twice in its half of the fourth on a walk to Sherwood, RBI single by Dylan Scales, followed by a hit batter and two walks. The second base on balls, issued to Durand, put the Cardinals up, 5-4.
NV would tack on an insurance run in the sixth when Rinkavage walked and later scored on a passed ball.
Meanwhile, pitcher Jake Armstrong retired six straight batters in the fourth through sixth innings and Joey Woodmansee came on and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth.
Wandell picked up the save, striking out all three batters he faced in the seventh.
Rosenberg led NV with two hits and an RBI, and Rinkavage scored twice. Scales and Sherwood added a hit, run and RBI apiece; Wandell had a hit and a run; and Durand had a run and RBI.
Sayre contributed two hits and a run to the SVEC effort; Smith had a hit, run and RBI; Jewell and Austin added a run apiece; Garrett Cooke tacked on a hit; and Grube had an RBI.
Armstrong got the win, striking out eight while giving up four hits and five walks.
Three SVEC pitchers allowed five hits and eight walks while fanning four batters.
The two teams will meet again Friday at 4:30 p.m at Alderman Fields in Van Etten.
