NEWARK VALLEY - Newark Valley was the only team to place all five scoring runners in the top 20 en route to the title at the IAC South Division Championship here Tuesday.
Highlighted by Jonny Sherwood's fast start and runner-up showing, the Cardinals scored 53 points to beat out Watkins Glen, which finished with 57.
The freshman led much of the race before Senecas standout Gabe Planty would end up winning with a time of 17:30.8. Sherwood clocked 17:57.8.
Connor Yetter placed ninth in 19:50.8, Mark Vosburgh took 11th with a 20:15.8, Seth Hartenstine was 13th 20:20.3 and Aiden Cabrera finished 18th in 21:36.6 to complete the Cardinals' scoring.
Also competing for NV were Patrick Bishop, 25th (22:07.5); Jake Ludwig, 27th (22:25.9); Tim Bishop, 33rd (23:36.6); Ryan Hawley, 39th (24:15.7); Montana Wallace, 40th (24:19.5);Trace Davis, 53rd (27:59.7); Noah Waterman, 54th (28:47.2); Aden Hollenbeck, 55th (29:33.3) and Jason Knight 60th (36:21.3).
Callum Avery led the SVEC squad to fifth place with a fifth place, clocking 19:11.5. The Eagles had 116 points.
Levi Mickelson finished 16th in 21:15.4, Ryan Hodges placed 26th with a 22:13.4, Benjamin Dizer took 34th in 23:46.2 and Zach Watson was 37th with a 24:07.5.
Also running for SVEC were Isaac Lindridge, 41st (24:21.1); Bryce Mills, 47th (25:31.9) and Luke Simonton, 59th (30:28.9).
