TIOGA CENTER — S-VE fell into a double-digit hole and its comeback attempt came up short in a 48-43 loss to Tioga here Monday.
"The girls played well tonight," said S-VE coach Abby Gentile. "Tioga came out hitting all of their shots in the third quarter and we got down by 13 at one point. We worked hard to come back and got to within four but they just made too many free throws down the stretch and secured their lead."
Olivia Ayres nailed two 3-pointers and Eve Wood had another as Tioga exploded for 24 third-quarter points to turn a four-point halftime deficit into a 38-26 advantage. Wood, held to two points in the first half, scored seven in the period.
She would go 9-for-16 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter and Ayres made all four of her foul shots as Tioga secured the win. The Tigers went 16-for-24 at the stripe in the final frame.
Madelynn Pasto knocked down a pair of threes in the fourth and Hannah Martinez had another. Pasto and Sophia Dutra scored six points each in the period, Martinez had five, and Sam Deppe and Ava Bruehwiler chipped in with four apiece.
Bruehwiler scored five points to pace the Panthers to a 10-6 first-quarter lead. Ayres hit a trey in each period to keep the Tigers close as they trailed, 18-14, at the half.
Dutra registered a double-double for S-VE with 10 points and 10 rebounds. She also had three blocks. Bruehwiler had 11 points, five assists and five rebounds; Pasto scored 12 points and grabbed five boards; Martinez had nine points and three assists; Paige Grube had two points, seven boards and three assists; Tara Perkins scored four points and blocked three shots; and Deppe added four points.
Wood poured in a game-high 20 points for Tioga; Ayres scored 19; Chloe Bellis had 10; Giovanna Rossi added seven and Julia Bellis tacked on two.
