CANDOR — Marathon clinched the IAC Division 1 title with an 8-2 victory over Candor here Thursday.
The Olympians, whose only division loss came in early April at the hands of the Indians, broke a 2-2 deadlock with a run in the top of the third inning. Andrew Tillotson single with one away and eventually scored to put Marathon up for good. Elijah Teeter walked and scored in the fourth to push the lead to 4-2, and the Olympians would pad their advantage with two runs in each of the final two innings.
Michael Hoyt singled to lead off the sixth and Tillotson reached on an error to follow. Both runners would score.
E. Ticknor doubled to start the seventh, Michael Hoyt reached base and both players made it home to to finish out the scoring.
The Olympians opened the scoring after Michael Hoyt, Tillotson and Caleb Ticknor reached base on consecutive errors in the first, and Hoyt and Tillotson would score for a 2-0 lead.
Candor knotted things up in the second after Brandon Hoyt reached on an error and Phillip Rhoades smacked a one-out double, and both players scored.
The Indians moved several base-runners into scoring position throughout the game, but were unable to plate any additional runs.
Jaikob Avery reached second in the second after a walk and Sean Cook-Neild made it to third in the third after being hit by a pitch. Hoyt singled and Nick Thomas reached on and error in the sixth, but the duo was stranded at third and second, respectively. In the seventh, Dylan Austin single and moved to third on a pair of groundouts before the game concluded.
At the plate, Hoyt, Rhoades and Austin each went 1-for-3 for Candor.
Marathon (9-5) finishes division play with an 8-1 record.
Candor (1-9, 1-6 Div. 1) plays (4-5, 4-3 Div. 1) in the S-VE Wooden Bat Tournament Saturday.
