OWEGO — Owego fell behind Corning, 4-0, and was unable to make up enough ground in a 5-2 STAC loss here Tuesday.
The Indians attempted to rally in the bottom of the fifth, picking up both their runs on Jason Kithcart’s two-out, bases-loaded single.
The comeback attempt started with Karson Tofte’s one-out single to left and Joey Higgins’ ground ball base hit. With two down, Nate Bennett drew a base on balls, loading the sacks for Kithcart’s hit to left.
Owego had six hits on the day, but committed four errors which helped the Hawks score three unearned runs.
Corning put its first run in the books in the third. In the fourth, the Hawks used two hits and a trio of errors to push their lead to 3-0, then added another run in the fourth. The final run came in the seventh following a single, hit batter and an error.
Tofte and Higgins both went 2-for-3 while Nick Prokop was 1-for-2 and Kithcart was 1-for-4.
Owego visits Johnson City today.
