OWEGO — M-E’s Allie L’Amoreaux shifted from all-state shortstop to pitcher this season and Owego found out why. The junior standout struck out 16 batters and allowed just five base runners in a 7-0 STAC victory here Wednesday.
The Indians were able to move into scoring position just once. That opportunity arose in the bottom of the sixth inning when Emma Howe led off with a single up the middle and moved to third on Miki Worzel’s two-out base hit. L’Amoreaux would fan the next batter to snuff out the threat.
Owego’s other base-runners came on a two-out single by Grace Thomas in the first; Summer Pierce’s two-out walk in the second and an error off the bat of Worzel with one away in the fourth.
L’Amoreaux gave the three-time defending Class A state champion Spartans the only run they would need when she reached on an error and scored in the first. Amanda Desantis singled and scored to make it 2-0.
M-E added a trio of runs in the third on three singles, two errors and a walk. Desalts scored her second run of the game, and Melissa Demo and Helena Layton added the others to build a 5-0 advantage.
Jackie Bigelow doubled to start off the fifth, Jessica Baron reached on an error and both players eventually found their way home to push the lead to 7-0.
The Indians’ Chelsea Sellars finished strong in the circle, retiring eight of the final nine batters.
Owego visits Ithaca at 5 p.m. today.
