Tioga County Sports ReportITHACA — Newark Valley grad Trevor Middendorf is headed to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships following his runner-up showing at the Region 2 Qualifier held at Ithaca College this past weekend.
Middendorf, a freshman, opened the tournament with a 21-6 tech. fall over Lycoming College's Leonard Cocca in 2:34.
In the quarterfinals, he outlasted Gus Smith of Wilkes University, 8-6, rallying from a 4-0 deficit on the strength of a 5-point takedown and near fall in the third period.
Middendorf moved on to face New Jersey City University’s Dominic Terracciano in the semifinals and rode another 5-point takedown and near fall to a 5-2 victory.
In the championship bout, he fell to Centenary University senior Jack Thode by an 18-2 tech. fall in 5:59, ending Middendorf’s 7-match win streak.
Middendorf (24-6) will compete in the Division III championship tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa March 13-14.
