SECTION IV GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY RIDES FAST START TO 61-48 WIN OVER WALTON-DOWNSVILLE IN CLASS B QUARTERFINALS (2026-02-27)

NEWARK VALLEY — Fourth-seeded Newark Valley played a strong first half on its way to a 61-48 win over fifth-seeded Walton-Downsville here Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Section IV, Class B playoffs.

"The team played well tonight," said Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger. "It was a great team effort."

"Aubrey got us off to a great start in the first quarter and it was good to see some shots go down early," he noted. "Kam (Short) had one of her best offensive games tonight and that really effected the way they needed to guard us. 

"Haven (Aylesworth) did a nice job getting to the basket for either a score or assist," he added. (Adrianna Rich) Richie played top-notch defense tonight and Elizabeth (Phillips) had another great rebounding night."

Aubrey Kwiatkowski canned a trio of 3-pointers and pumped in 11 points in the first quarter to help Newark Valley to a 14-9 lead in the opening stanza.

Haven Aylesworth tossed in nine points, including an old-fashion three-point play, while Kam Short scored five points, and Kwiatkowski added four points to fuel an 18-7 run to extend the lead to 32-16 at the halftime break.

Aylesworth scored nine points, including a 3-pointer, in the third quarter, and Short added four points, but W-D trimmed the deficit with a 16-13 advantage to close the gap to 45-32.

Short pumped in nine points in the fourth quarter, and Kwiatkowski added a 3-pointer as Newark Valley finished off the win.

Short led Newark Valley with 21 points, six rebounds, five assists, three blocked shots, and two steals, while Aylesworth had 20 points, five rebounds, seven assists, and five steals, and Kwiatkowski had 18 points and two assists.

Elizabeth Phillips hauled down 11 rebounds, and Adrianna Rich had four boards, two assists and two steals.

Newark Valley returns to action Tuesday at Susquehanna Valley at 6 p.m.
