(FRIDAY) IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: STRONG THIRD QUARTER PROPELS NEWARK VALLEY TO 52-44 WIN OVER LANSING (2026-02-09)

LANSING — Newark Valley used a strong third quarter to pull out a 52-44 win over Lansing here Friday night in IAC Large School girls basketball crossover action.

Elizabeth Phillips knocked down a 3-pointer and scored five points, and Haven Aylesworth added four points to help the Cardinals to a 12-10 lead after the opening eight minutes.

Kam Short and Adrianna Rich scored four points apiece in the second quarter, and Aubrey Kwiatkowski and Phillips each canned a 3-pointer, but the Bobcats outscored the Cardinals 17-14 to take a 27-26 lead into the halftime intermission.

Short scored six points in the third quarter, and the Newark Valley defense put the clamps on Lansing in a 12-4 run that rallied the Cardinals into a 38-31 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

The Cardinals only made 4 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter, but Gabi James and Rich each connected from behind the 3-point arc to help them seal the win.

Short scored 13 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, blocked four shots, and had two assists and two steals, while Rich had 13 points, six rebounds and five steals to lead Newark Valley.

Phillips had 10 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots in the win, while Aylesworth had nine points, 11 boards and three assists, Kwiatkowski added three points, three rebounds and two steals.

Piper Mason led Lansing with 20 points.

Newark Valley returns to action Tuesday at Watkins Glen.
