Tioga County Sports ReportNEWARK VALLEY — Lansing gradually crept away from Newark Valley to post a 50-36 victory in IAC Large School boys basketball crossover action here Friday.
“They are really stubborn defensively,” coach Scott Stratton said of the Bobcats. “They give up the fewest points per game in the league and they made life difficult for us offensively tonight.
“I felt good about our defensive effort and performance. We were prepared for them and for the most part it showed. Lansing just did a better job working to get good looks on the offensive end. And they made shots. We did not do that nearly as much tonight.”
The Bobcats led, 9-6, after one period of play, then extended their advantage to 26-18 at the half.
Cooper Davis put up three points and Nate Hinckley added a trey in the first while Hinckley and Tim Wojtysiak accounted for five points apiece in the second. Each player knocked down a 3-pointer in the process.
Logan Mayo had eight points for Lansing at the break, and Korbin Pope and Jackson Tarbert added six apiece.
NV kept it close in the third quarter but slipped further behind, 38-28, heading into the final eight minutes.
Hinckley nailed his third trey of the evening, Tristan Veruto added three points, and Josh Benjamin and Wojtysiak scored two apiece.
Mayo and Pope scored four points each.
Hinckley led the Cardinals with 13 points, including three treys, and pulled down five rebounds.Wojtysiak scored nine points, Benjamin popped for a half-dozen markers, and Davis and Benjamin chipped in with three points and five boards apiece.
Mayo led all scorers with 14 points, Pope had 12 and Tarbert tacked on 10.
NV hosts Watkins Glen on Tuesday.
