IAC JV GIRLS BASKETBALL: S-VE EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO 5 (2026-02-02)

SPENCER — The Spencer-Van Etten JV girls basketball team extended its winning streak to five games with a trio of IAC Small School victories over a seven-day span in late January.

The Panthers defeated Groton, 43-36, on Jan. 23, and downed Odessa-Montour, 28-10, on Wednesday. Both games were on the road. S-VE returned home Thursday to face Moravia and won, 29-24, improving to 7-2 on the season.

S-VE 43, GROTON 36
The Panthers dominated the second half to rally for the victory. They outscored Groton, 13-5 in the third quarter and 13-6 in the fourth.

Maddy Gentile put in six points in the third period, Cloey Adams drained a 3-pointer in the fourth and Leah Neish scored all six of her points after the break.

The Red Hawks took the opening stanza, 15-11, and led, 25-17, at the break.

Rhylee Silvernail scored six points in the first quarter and Gentile added five.

Gentile finished with a team-high 15 points and also had four rebounds, three steals and an assist. Silvernail contributed 11 points, five steals, three rebounds and an assist.

Neish added three rebounds and a steal to her stat sheet; Adams contributed three points, three steals, three boards and an assist; Thea Kastenhuber pitched in with three points, a steal and a rebound; Mackenzie Rose had two points; and Lillie Horyczun added one point and one rebound.

S-VE 28, O-M 10
In a low-scoring contest, neither team scored in double digits until the Panthers put up 10 points in the fourth quarter.

They put up six in each of the first three periods while holding O-M to five, including a scoreless third period.

Leah Neish led all scorers with 11 points to go with five rebounds and two steals. Adams had six points, four boards, two blocks and one assist; and Dev Lau recorded four points, five rebounds and four steals.

Silvernail added three points, three steals and three boards; Gentile had two points, two steals, two rebounds and an assist; and Horyczun tacked on two points, three boards and a steal.

S-VE 29, MORAVIA 24
The Panthers shut out Moravia in the fourth quarter and rallied from a 24-19 deficit for the win.

Neish knocked down a 3-pointer with 3:39 remaining to put S-VE ahead, 25-24, then Rose added a basket with 1:02 to go.

The Blue Devils missed a 3-pointer with seven seconds left and Nesih sank a pair of free throws with five ticks on the clock to secure the victory.
