CANDOR — The Candor boys basketball team rode a 10-point first-quarter advantage to a 60-48 victory over Newfield in IAC South Small School action here Friday night, clinching the division title in the process.
The Coyotes received six points from Donald Makie and a pair of 3-pointers from Teagan Kwiatkowski to build a 19-10 lead in the first eight minutes.
The Trojans managed to slow Candor’s scoring down in the second period, but the Coyotes still managed to stretch their lead to 26-13 at the break. A Kyle Jantz 3-pointer was the highlight of the quarter.
The third quarter turned into a scoring display with the Coyotes holding a 20-18 edge. Jakobe Foster, scoreless in the first half, pumped out eight points while Makie and Mat Smith tacked on five apiece, including one trey each.
Newfield took the fourth quarter, accounting for 17 of the 31 total points. Foster added another nine points to his tally, giving him a game-high 17.
Foster scored nine of his points at the free throw line. The Coyotes’ 15-for-23 free throw shooting didn’t turn any heads (only 65 percent), but definitely outshined the Trojans’ 28 percent effort (7-for-28).
Foster grabbed 12 rebounds, giving him a double-double. He also dished out five assists and had two steals. Makie had 14 points, went 5-for-7 at the stripe, pulled down seven boards, and added one steal and one assist.
Kwiatkowski contributed 12 points, including three 3-pointers, and had seven rebounds and a steal; Smith had a pair of treys and totaled eight points, five rebounds and an assist.
Jants chipped in with a 3-pointer, a rebounds and an assist; Ben Sheridan had two points and six boards; Kellen Williamson recorded two points and three boards; and Ryan Huizinga racked on two points and one rebound.
LeMari Spears led Newfield with 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and Malcolm Jenkins added 11 points.
Candor visits Spencer-Van Etten on Tuesday.
