Tioga County Sports ReportTIOGA CENTER — Newark Valley had the depth to defeat a Spencer-Van Etten / Candor's thinly-staffed lineup, but didn’t have the experience to match up with Tioga and Groton in a quadrangular girls wrestling meet held here Wednesday.
NV prevailed over the Eagles, 35-14, but dropped a 35-23 verdict to Groton and a 35-20 decision to the host Tigers.
GROTON 35, NV 23
The Cardinals won one contested bout and it was a thriller. NV’s Malerie Gregrow found herself trailing, 6-0, in the first period, but managed to battle back to claim an 8-7 decision over the Red Hawks’ Emily Cotterill at 145 pounds.
Gregrow would score a takedown late in the opening period, cutting the lead to 6-2. In the second period she was able to close the gap to 7-6 then, with 32 seconds remaining, she scored the winning takedown.
The Cardinals’ other wins were forfeits to Tressa Middendorf (94), Hadley Merrill (100), Kailyn Harvey (120) and Isabella King (152).
NV 35, SVEC 14
Middendorf and Merrill opened with forfeit victories for a 10-0 NV lead, but the Eagles closed the gap to 10-9 on a fall by Elizabeth Kunte and a tech. fall from Tayah Beach.
The Cardinals mixed forfeit wins to Madilynn Davis (126), Emily Laporte (138), Gregrow and King in with a 38-second fall by Billeigh Dawson (132) to build a 35-9 cushion.
Katelynn VanEtten received a forfeit for SVEC's final points.
TIOGA 35, NV 20
Middendorf and Merrill picked up their third forfeits of the evening, but pins by Mia Hall (114) and Vida Rossi (120) tied the match at 10 apiece.
Dawson would respond with a 57-second fall, but the Tigers locked up the victory with falls from Sophia Haney (132), Cora Szymanski (138) and Amelia Toomey (145).
King gave NV a pin at 152, but Tioga wrapped things up with forfeits to Kyah Nelson (185) and Emily Moniz (235).
Next up for Newark Valley is the Section IV championships at Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton.
