Tioga County Sports ReportPOPLAR RIDGE — The Candor girls basketball team won its seventh straight game Friday, defeating Southern Cayuga, 60-44, in an IAC Small School crossover game here.
The Coyotes took an 11-9 edge in the first quarter on six points from Emmi Makie, a 3-pointer by Malley Heidl, and one free throw apiece by Hazel Ray and Shawna Conklin.
Candor stretched its advantage to 36-24 at halftime during a high-scoring second period.
Makie knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and finished the period with 13 points. Megan Williamson nailed a pair of treys as well and tacked on a free throw, Conklin added a basket and a free throw, and Alaina Yeier scored her first varsity basket.
The Falcons, who came in averaging 25 points per game, outscored Candor, 9-6, to trim the lead to 42-33 heading into the final stanza. Williamson accounted for a pair of baskets and Makie added two free throws.
Candor pulled away down the stretch, outscoring Southern Cayuga, 18-11, over the final eight minutes.
Makie scored eight points, all field goals, Williamson and Conklin added two buckets apiece, and Ray tacked on a field goal.
The Falcons drained a half-dozen 3-pointers on the night, which contributed to the boost in their scoring average.
Makie posted her 12th double-double of the season, scoring 29 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. She also had two assists and two steals.
Williamson chipped in with 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists; Conklin contributed eight points, 13 rebounds, two assists and three steals; Ray added three points, 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals; Heidl had three points, three rebounds and four steals; and Yeier tacked on two points, two rebounds and one steal.
Candor improved to 6-2 in the IAC and 9-3 overall.
The Coyotes will host Tioga on Tuesday.
