Tioga County Sports ReportCANDOR — The Candor girls basketball team held off Spencer-Van Etten, 43-33, in IAC South Small School action here Wednesday night.
Megan Williamson put the Coyotes on the board first with a jumper in the opening seconds. S-VE responded with a field goal after a minute of scoreless play.
The quarter would remain a low-scoring affair until Malley Heidl hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining. The Panthers responded immediately, ending the frame 8-4.
The teams battled with back-and-forth baskets throughout the second quarter. Emmi Makie scored seven points for the Coyotes as did Lauren Gillette for the Panthers and Candor took a 21-15 lead into intermission.
S-VE would battle back in the third, besting the Coyotes, 13-9. Gillette scored six more points and Trinity Dashler hit a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining to cut the Coyote lead to two, 30-28, entering the final stanza.
Candor went on a 7-0 run to begin the fourth to extend its lead to nine, with baskets from Makie and Hazel Ray, and a trey from Williamson. Dashler would hit another three to end the run, and hit another field goal on the next possession to bring the Panthers back within four at 37-33.
The Coyotes would hold S-VE scoreless over the remaining five minutes. Makie would score six for Candor down the stretch including a 4-for-4 performance from the free throw line.
Makie finished the game with her 11th consecutive double-double, scoring 16 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. She also had three steals.
Williamson added 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals; Ray contributed eight points, eight rebounds and two steals; Shawna Conklin chipped in with five points, 11 boards and two blocks; and Heidl tacked on three points.
Gillette led S-VE with 17 points and Dashler added eight.
Candor (5-2 IAC, 8-3 overall) returns to action Friday at Southern Cayuga for a league crossover while S-VE (3-4 IAC, 4-9 overall) visits Groton.
