Tioga County Sports ReportWINDSOR — Newark Valley placed four wrestlers in the top eight at the Windsor Lady Black Knights Invitational here Monday.
Isabella King was the highest placer for the Cardinals, taking fourth at 152 pounds, while Hadley Merrill had the most wins for NV on the way to a fifth-place finish at 94. Tressa Middendorf took seventh at 94 and Billeigh Dawson was eighth at 126.
King opened with a 39-second fall over West Genessee’s Arwa Abedrabbah, then pinned Oneonta’s Willow Robinson in 1:04. She dropped her final two bouts by fall, to Aria PearsonLewis of Valley Central in 1:41 and Windsor’s Ana Cartagena in 5:03.
Merrill went 4-1 on the day, including two victories over Union-Endicott’s Amirah Clinkscale. The first win was a 14-1 tech fall in 3:33 in her first bout and the other was a fall in 1:20 in the consolation bracket.
She lost her second match to General Brown’s Fern Jewett, the eventual champion, by a 10-0 tech fall in 2:43. Merrill rebounded with a 39-second decking of Windsor’s Addie Deyo, the pin of Clinkscale and a 12-2 tech fall in 2:30 over Joye Lai of James/Christian Brothers Academy.
Middendorf dispatched Cortland’s Onalee Short in 34 seconds before losing to Unified’s Madison Farberman by a 10-0 tech fall in 45 seconds. She pinned Hannah Giammateo of Sidney in 1:48, but lost the next bout by pinin 52 seconds against Lai. She pinned Clinkscale in 3:46 for seventh place.
Dawson pinned Cori Martin of General Brown in 4:27, then fell to West Genesee’s Riley Butler by pin in 33 seconds. She would deck Valley Central’s Ashlynn McPhillips in 1:09 in her third match, then lose to Indian River’s Rylynn Van Tassel by fall in 2:43. In the 7th-place bout, Dawson lost by pin to Ithaca’s Brooke Parker.
Abigail Escalante went 2-2 at 120. Her wins included a 10-0 tech fall in 1:15 against Susquehanna Valley’s Alaina Judy and by pin in 3:48 over West Genesee’s Charlotte Retkwa.
Nora McCann was 1-2 at 107, scoring a fall against Deposit/Hancock’s Germania Vivar.
Kailynn Harvey was 1-2 also, at 120. She pinned Michaela Durkee of Groton in 1:50.
Also competing for the Cardinals were Malerie Gregrow (132) and Ashleen Callahan (235).
NV was 13th in the 44-team tournament with 74.5 points. U-E won the team title with 144.5.
