IAC JV BOYS BASKETBALL: S-VE STARTS NEW YEAR 1-2 (2026-01-15)

SPENCER — The Spencer-Van Etten JV boys basketball team started the new year with a 1-2 record.

The Panthers stumbled late in a 51-43 loss to Newfield on Jan. 6 at home, then S-VE fell to Union Springs, 78-44, on the road on Friday. On Tuesday, the Panthers put one in the win column with a 49-46 road victory against Odessa-Montour.

S-VE 49, O-M 46
The Panthers rallied from a 21-15 halftime deficit, pumping out 20 third-quarter points to tie the game at 35 heading into the final frame.

Cam Losey scored six of his game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter while Logan Smith and Taylor Vanderpoel canned one 3-pointer each.

S-VE led, 12-5, after the first eight minutes of play with Losey accounting for six points, but the Grizzlies battled back with an 18-3 run in the second period.

Vanderpoel and Damien Vellake added 10 points apiece to the victory. Vanderpoel had a pair of treys and was 4-for-4 at the free throw line.

Gabe McCracken chipped in with six points, Smith had five and Nate Ashcraft tacked on four.

Ethan Dupay led O-M with 14 points, while Hunter Jarrell and Jeremy Updyke scored 11 apiece.

US 78, S-VE 44
The high-scoring Wolves jumped out to a 20-7 lead after one quarter and built a 50-21 cushion at halftime.They led, 70-30, heading into the final frame.

Nicholas Schulz accounted for 30 Springs points, canning five 3-pointers in the process. Ethan Keim added 16 points and Charlie Parker chipped in with a pair of treys.

Vanderpoel knocked down four threes and led the Panthers with 16 points. Losey and Landon Whitmarsh scored nine and seven points, respectively. McCracken, Smith and Vellake added four points apiece.

Newfield 51, S-VE 43
S-VE fell behind early, 10-7, but rallied to take a 24-20 lead into the break as Vanderpoel put up nine points in the second period.

The game was tied, 33-33, heading into the fourth quarter, but the Trojans drained three 3-pointers to secure the win.

Vanderpoel made four treys for the Panthers and led the team with 18 points while Losey recorded 13 points. Nathan Ashcraft, McCracken and Vellake chipped in with four points each.

Newfield’s Tanner Ray led all scorers with 24 points, Sawyer Aidun added 13 and Gavin Jenney contributed a pair of treys.
