Tioga County Sports ReportNEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley closed out the game with an 11-1 run to pull out a 43-33 win over Watkins Glen here Tuesday night in IAC South Large School Division girls basketball action.
"It's a nice division win versus a tough opponent," said Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger.
"Our defensive effort was solid all game and was certainly the difference-maker in the fourth quarter," he noted.
"Haven (Aylesworth) really got going offensively in the second half and gave us a spark," said Schweiger. "Kam (Short) anchored the defense and Richie (Adrianna Rich) had an impactful all-around game.
"It was a team win and we needed everyone’s contribution to get it done," added Schweiger.
Adrianna Rich canned a 3-pointer in the first quarter, and four of her teammates added buckets to help the Cardinals to an 11-8 lead after the first eight minutes.
The Lake Hawks rallied to take an 18-17 lead at the halftime intermission.
Haven Aylesworth scored six points, including a 4-for-4 effort at the free-throw line, in the third quarter, while Rich drained another 3-pointer, and Elizabeth Phillips converted an old-fashion three-point play as the Cardinals evened the score at 32-32 heading into the final eight minutes.
Newark Valley limited the Lake Hawks to just one free throw in the fourth quarter, while Aylesworth scored six points, and Rich added a conventional three-point play in the decisive 11-1 game-closing run.
Aylesworth led Newark Valley with 16 points, five rebounds, two assists and six steals, while Rich had nine points, nine boards, five steals, and one blocked shots, and Short had seven points, 11 rebounds, and four blocked shots.
Aubrey Kwiatkowski added six points, five assists and three steals in the win, and Phillips chipped in with five points and seven rebounds.
Newark Valley, now 9-2 and winners of six in a row, returns to action Friday at Notre Dame.
