IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: SMITH LEADS CANDOR IN 63-50 WIN OVER MARATHON (2026-01-09)

MARATHON — Candor fended off a second-half rally with a strong fourth quarter, and Matthew Smith had a career-night in a 63-50 win over Marathon here Friday night in IAC Small School Division boys basketball crossover action.

Jakobe Foster scored six points in the first quarter, while Kellen Williamson added four points and Donald Makie and Smith each knocked down 3-pointers to help Candor to a 16-11 lead after the first eight minutes.

Smith drained a trio of 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the second quarter, while Makie and Foster each scored four points and Ben Sheridan connected from behind the 3-point line. The Coyotes outscored the Olympians 23-13 in the stanza to take a 39-24 lead into the halftime break.

Marathon answered with a 19-8 run in the third quarter to close the gap to 47-43 entering the final eight minutes, but Smith knocked down his fifth 3-pointer of the game early in the fourth quarter and added an old-fashion three-point play point to fuel a 16-7 game-closing run for the Coyotes to seal the win.

Smith scored a career-high 22 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Candor, and Foster had 21 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Makie had eight points, three rebounds and one blocked shot in the win, while Sheridan added five points and six boards, Williamson chipped in with four points, Teagan Kwiatkowski added seven rebounds and two blocked shots, and Ryan Huizinga hauled down seven boards and dished out two assists.

Candor returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Tioga.
