NEWARK VALLEY — Elizabeth Phillips had a breakout game, and Aubrey Kwiatkowski came though in the clutch to lift Newark Valley to a 42-38 win over Lansing here Friday night in IAC Large School crossover girls basketball action.
Phillips had 15 points, 10 rebounds and two steals, while Kwiatkowski had 13 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, and three assists in the win.
"Aubrey (Kwiatkowski) was not feeling her best, but she turned in a great performance," said Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger.
"She made a big three and converted two big free throws in the fourth to give us the lead," he noted. "From there, we did just enough to hold on.
"And, Elizabeth Phillips had a breakout game, with her first double-double," added Schweiger. "She really stepped up tonight."
Phillips scored six points in the first quarter, and Kam Short added four points to help the Cardinals to a 14-13 lead after the first eight minutes.
Lansing used a 10-5 spurt in the second quarter to take a 23-19 lead into the halftime intermission, but Phillips scored five points, including a 3-pointer, in the third quarter, and Kwiatkowski canned a 3-pointer to fuel a 12-5 run that put the Cardinals up 31-28 heading into the final eight minutes.
Kwiatkowski scored five points in the fourth quarter, including her key 3-pointer, and Phillips added four points to help NV preserve the win.
Kam Short contributed six points, 12 rebounds, four blocked shots, two assists, and two steals, while Haven Aylesworth added four points, six rebounds, and three assists, and Adrianna Rich chipped in with three assists, four steals and one blocked shot.
Newark Valley returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Watkins Glen.
