Tioga County Sports ReportNEWARK VALLEY — Norwich closed the game with a 6-0 run in the final 90 seconds to pull out a 43-37 win over Newark Valley here Tuesday night in non-league girls basketball action.
"The girls played well tonight against a pretty darn good team," said Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger.
"I’m really pleased with our effort on defense tonight. We held them to four threes and we made five, and I didn’t expect that," he noted.
"We had to deal with foul trouble that really hurt us down the stretch and they won the battle from the free-throw line," added Schweiger.
Haven Aylesworth scored six points in the first quarter, and Aubrey Kwiatkowski added five points, including a 3-pointer, but Norwich outscored the Cardinals, 15-14, in the opening eight minutes
The Purple Tornadoes used an 8-6 advantage in the second quarter to take a 23-20 lead into the halftime intermission.
Adriana Rich knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter for the Cardinals, but Norwich maintained its 3-point lead, at 31-28, heading into the final eight minutes.
Newark Valley tied the game at 37-37 with 1:30 remaining, but the Tornadoes scored the final six points of the game.
"They were a bit better in those final moments," said Schweiger.
"This game was a great learning opportunity," he noted. "Hopefully, we can apply the lessons moving forward.
"We hate to lose, but there were still a lot of positives to take away," added Schweiger.
Rich had 13 points, including three 3-pointers, three assists, three steals, and two blocked shots, and Aylesworth had 12 points, seven rebounds, four steals, and one blocked shot.
Kwiatkowski added eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, three assists, and three steals, while Kam Short chipped in with four points, five boards, and one blocked shot, and Elizabeth Phillips had two assists and one blocked shot.
"Haven (Aylesworth) played a solid all around game, and Richie (Adriana Rich) caught fire in the second half, which was a big help," said Schweiger. "And, Aubrey (Kwiatkowski) played really well at the point under some pretty intense pressure."
Josey Ryan led Norwich with 15 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, and Emma Urgo added 11 points.
Newark Valley returns to action Monday against Deposit-Hancock in the opening round of the Marathon Holiday Tournament.
