BINGHAMTON — Kameron and Kollen Westbrook recorded 5-1 records as the Spencer-Van Etten/ Candor wrestling team went 3-3 at the Mark Cody Duals here Monday.
“A pretty good performance today,” coach Robbie Swartout said. “We went 3-3 on the day, pretty good against some pretty tough schools. Lost three duels because of just too many forfeits, giving up too many points. Forfeits, not filling up the whole lineup, but overall the wrestling was really tough. Lots and lots of improvements have been made, so no complaints.”
Swartout saw a few of his wrestlers step up for the team.
“Our freshman, Gabe Benjamin at 157. He wrestled really tough today, especially considering he's weighing in at 150,” Swartout said. “Right after Christmas, we get some kids moved around, we can get him down to his actual weight class, but he stepped up big today.
“Kam Westbrook stepped up really good for us today too. Got a lot of wins that he definitely should get and lost one that he probably shouldn't have lost, but hopefully we'll see him again and get it back.”
Benjamin, Cooper Zufall, Caden Sims and Jak Smith each went 4-2 to contribute. Dante Davis and Conner Breed won two bouts apiece, and Korbin Brenza added a win.
SVEC was without last year’s top wrestler, Rodney Vaow, who is nursing a knee injury.
“Rod hurt his knee a little bit this week at practice so we're just resting him up getting ready for Windsor and everything. It's a much bigger tournament,” Swartout said. “It helps a lot more with postseason seeding, so we're going to keep him out until then.”
The Eagles started their day against eventual champion Minisink Valley and came out on the short side of a 68-12 verdict. Kollen Westbrook and Zufall registered falls.
Round 2 brought a 56-12 loss to Johnson City. Kamren Westbrook decked his opponent in 17 seconds and Dante Davis received a forfeit.
SVEC defeated Trumansburg, 45-30, in Round 3, rallying from a 30-0 deficit. Pins went to the Eagles’ Kamren Westbrook, Benjamin, Korbin Brenza, Zufall and Sims. Accepting forfeits were Kollen Westbrook, Conner Breed and Smith.
In Round 4, SVEC dug itself out of an 18-0 hole to tie the match with Edison, then rallied from five down behind falls by Sim, Breed and Smith to win, 36-29.
Kamren Westbrook, Sims and Smith chalked up falls in a 41-22 victory over Binghamton/Seton Catholic in Round 5.
Following a Round 6 bye, the Eagles took on Horseheads in Round 7, falling 47-34. Kamren and Kollen Westbrook, and Zufall had pins, Benjamin and Sims recorded tech falls, and Smith tacked on a forfeit.
