OWEGO — The Owego defense stepped it up in the fourth quarter as the River Hawks rallied past Oneonta, 28-26, in STAC JV girls basketball action here Friday night.
The Yellowjackets were held to a single point in the fourth quarter as Owego overcame a 25-21 deficit.
At the other end of the court, Keira Henry scored five points for the River Hawks and Elise Silvanic added a basket.
With the score deadlocked at 26, Henry tipped away an inbound pass which would eventually end up in Silvanic’s hands and she would take the ball nearly three-quarters the length of the court, driving the lane with the game-winning bucket.
Henry put up six points as Owego grabbed an 8-5 lead after one quarter of play, then Bella Beams scored all five of her points in the second period as the hosts took a 19-13 advantage into the half.
Oneonta dominated both ends of the court in the third quarter, surging ahead with a 12-2 run to make it 25-21 with one period remaining. Edyn Aiyamo and Lilly Schmitt scored five points each, including one 3-pointer apiece, to lead the charge.
Henry led all scorers with 15 points, Silvanic added a half-dozen and Lily Davis tacked on a basket.
Schmitt paced Oneonta with 11 points.
