Tioga County Sports ReportWAVERLY — Owego jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead, but Waverly stormed back to win 11 of the last 12 bouts, including nine by first-period fall, in a 65-16 win here Wednesday night in STAC wresting action.
Seventh-grader Gavin Lovell gave the River Hawks a 6-0 lead with a first-period pin at 107 pounds, and sophomore Vitaliy Sirotkin made it 10-0 with a 9-0 major decision of Waverly 7th-grader Mason Phillips at 114 pounds..
Freshman Avery Bowman started the Wolverine pin parade with a 45-second fall, and junior Rhylee Stotler put Waverly ahead for good, at 12-10, beating the first-period horn with a pin of sophomore Robert Curley at 1:59 in the 126-pound match-up..
Senior Hudson Sink capped a wild 63 seconds of action with a pin of 8th-grader Carson Desmond at 132 pounds to put the Wolverines ahead 18-10.
After Owego sophomore John Cornwell collected a forfeit at 132 to close the gap to 18-16
Senior Daltton Davis got the Wolverines back on track with an 18-3 technical fall of freshman Finnigan Morgan in 1:46 at 144 pounds to put Waverly ahead 23-16.
At 150 pounds, junior Nico Rae scored a fall in 1:28 to trigger a run of six straight pins — all in less than one minute — with a forfeit sandwiched among them.
Junior Parker Larson locked in a standing cradle for a 23-second fall at 157 pounds, and senior Cooper Robinson needed 49 seconds at 165 pounds to make it 41-16.
Junior Joey Mack was dominant in a 41-second pin at 172 pounds to give the Wolverines a 47-16.
After freshman Brooks Lathrop received a forfeit at 190 pounds, junior Matthias Welles and senior Troy Beeman closed out the match with pins of 40 and 56 seconds in the 215- and 285-pound match-ups.
Owego returns to action Thursday night at Johnson City.
