OWEGO — Owego battled to the end, but didn’t have an answer for Windsor’s Nico Soriano in a 67-62 loss to the Black Knights in STAC boys basketball action here Tuesday.

Soriano scored a game-high 25 points, going 6-for-8 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter to hold the River Hawks at bay.

“A really good high school basketball game,” said coach Chris Evans. “This was two pretty even teams, but Soriano, a big athletic guard, was the difference.”

Windsor took a 16-14 edge into the second quarter behind seven points from Brayden Moran and six from Soriano.

Soriano added seven points in the second period as the Knights extended their lead to 32-24. Duke Snyder had seven points for the home team.

The third quarter was tight with Windsor holding a one-point edge, making it 48-39 heading into the final frame. Soriano tacked on another six points

The River Hawks cranked out 23 points over the final eight minutes, but it wasn’t enough. Carter Rieg pumped out 13 of his team-high 21 points while Snyder and Nolan Card tacked on five apiece.

Soriano went 8-for-11 at the charity stripe for the night and added one 3-pointer while Moran made all four of his foul shots and had one trey as well.Jack Waharton knocked down three threes and finished with 11 points and Derreck Safrano added two treys.

Card recorded 13 points and went 5-for-7 at the free throw line, Calvin Smith had eight points, sank one trey and was 3-for-3 at the charity stripe, and Kingston Brainard added one three.

“Carter Rieg and Duke Snyder were tremendous, but we just didn't make enough threes,” Evans said.

“We will get better as Nolan Card and Atlas Boland get more practice time. I'm excited about our squad.”
