ELMIRA HEIGHTS — Newark Valley got off to a quick start and never looked back in a 61-24 win over Thomas A. Edison here Friday night IAC South Large School boys basketball action.
"I’m pleased with our defense effort and execution," said Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger. "And, I like the way we rebounded tonight.
"Three kids in double-digits is really good," he noted. "Our offense was good enough.
"It's a nice win to start the league schedule," added Schweiger.
Adrianna Rich scored nine points, including a 3-pointer, in the first quarter and Haven Aylesworth added six points to fuel Newark Valley's game-opening 21-8 run.
Aylesworth drained a pair of 3-pointers and scored seven points, and Gabi James added four markers in a 12-5 Cardinal run that extended the lead to 33-13 at the half.
Newark Valley kept it rolling in the third quarter as Aubrey Kwiatkowski buried a pair of 3-pointers and Kam Short added five points in 19-5 blitz that pushed the lead to 52-18 entering the final margin.
Aylesworth led Newark Valley with 21 points, including a 3-for-4 effort from behind the 3-point arc, 12 rebounds, three assists, and four steals, and Rich had 15 points, five boards, three assists, and four steals.
Short scored seven points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and blocked four shots for the Cardinals, while Kwiatkowski had six points, five assists and four steals, James scored six points, and Elizabeth Phillips hauled down 10 boards.
Newark Valley, now 2-1, returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Dryden.
