OWEGO — The Owego boys bowling team has been one of the most competitive teams in Section IV the past several years and new head coach Chris Dotson hopes to keep it that way. Meanwhile, the girls team has seen limited success and the coach is hoping the lady River Hawks will compete as well.
Senior Connor Kotski led the River Hawks to a third-place showing at the Section IV state qualifier last season, rolling a 1933 series. He came up one spot short of making the section’s Composite state team.
Dotson identifies him as “a solid strong lefty two-handed bowler.”
Junior Evan O’Hara “will be bringing in some leadership and a strong cleanup spot to the lineup,” Dotson said.
O’Hara was the team’s top bowler overall last season, setting the pace at the STAC end-of-season tournament with a 628th
series and at the Section IV Class B championships with a 668th
series.
Owego won the Class B title and was fourth in the STAC event.
Also returning is 8th-grader Grayson Quick, who “will be a great leadoff spot for the young power righthander,” according to Dotson.
“The boys finished second in the division last year and are looking to do better and fill our open spots left by the graduated seniors,” said Dotson. “On the small end we are competing every day for best timing and accuracy on the lanes.”
Dotson expects senior Elaina Anschutz anchor the girls team this year. She led the River Hawks to third place at the Section IV Class B tournament last season, finishing fifth individually.
Another senior Dotson thinks can contribute is senior Madison Kinney, who “will be using her past team experience to help develop out new bowlers.”
“The girls were fourth overall last season and aim to do better,” Dotson said. “We have some big shoes to fill with our new bowlers joining the team and working towards consistency. The girls are looking to compete.”
Johnathan Lillie and Logan Rosenberger are a couple of promising sophomores on the JV boys squad.
“We have some good modified bowlers that have already made an impact on making a JV match this season,” Dotson added.
They are 7th-graders Nathan Hatfield and Coeburn Locke.
