ELMIRA — Thomas A. Edison used a strong second half to rally for a 42-39 win over S-VE here Saturday afternoon at the Elmira College Girls Basketball Tip-Off Showcase.

Amani Diboun knocked down a 3-pointer and scored five points in the first quarter to help the Panthers to a 9-8 lead after the opening eight minutes.

Four different Panthers put their name in the scorebook in the second quarter, and their defense stifled the Spartans in a 7-4 spurt that extended the lead to 16-12 at the half.

Both teams found their offense in the third quarter. 

Lauren Gillette scored a pair buckets, and Kaidence Root and Maddie Ellison added three points apiece, but Edison outscored the Panthers, 13-12, in the third quarter to close the gap to 28-25.

Madelyn Harrison knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter for her only points of the game, and Mali Huffner added five points, including a 3-pointer, to fuel a game-ending 17-11 run to lift the Spartans to the win.

Root, who had six points in the fourth quarter, led S-VE with 12 points, four steals and two assists, while Gillette had seven points and three steals, and Diboun and Ellison added five points and three rebounds apiece.

Kendall Gentile contributed four points, three assists, and five steals for the Panthers, and Kaylee Kastenhuber chipped in with four points.

S-VE returns to action Monday at Harpursville.
