Tioga County Sports ReportNEWARK VALLEY — Seventh-grader Gavin Lovell garnered second-place honors and sophomore Vitaly Sirotkin finished third as a youthful Owego team gained valuable experience at the Larry Goodrich Memorial Wrestling Invitational here Saturday.
Lovell was one of six first-year varsity wrestlers competing for the River Hawks, who finished ninth in the 16-team event. He posted a 4-1 record at 103 pounds with three pins and a technical fall.
Sirotkin was 4-1 at 110, collecting three falls and a win by disqualification.
Sophomores Robert Curley (126) and John Cornwell (138) both placed fourth. Cornwell was 3-2 while Curley went 0-2.
Trevor Monell took sixth at 215 with a 3-2 record that included three falls while Anthony Neumuth was 2-3 at 285 to finish seventh.
Mamas Gehring (132) and Finn Morgan (138) both went 2-3 while Jaydin Brainard (175) was 1-2.
Also competing for the River Hawks were Lucas Stephens (118), David Martinez (126), Christjin Veasey (144) and Jayce Saulsbury (150).
Martinez, a first-year senior making his mat debut, would surrender via medical forfeit in his only bout.
Owego would finish 10th with 81.5 points. NV would score 200.5 points to win the team challenge, Division I Rush-Henrietta was second with 196 and Central Valley took third with 188. Penfield and Elmira, both D-1 teams, were fourth (130.5) and fifth (127.5), respectively.
NOTE: A victory by medical forfeit counts as a win, but a loss by medical forfeit does not count on a wrestler’s record.
