Tioga County Sports ReportMORAVIA — Moravia won the first two weight classes, but Newark Valley reeled off eight straight wins, including six by fall, in a season-opening, 61-18, win here Wednesday night in IAC wrestling action.
Trailing 12-0 after Blue Devils falls at 103 and 110 pounds, 8th-grader Avery Davis put the Cardinals on the board with a 58-second fall against Trevor LaFleur at 118 pounds.
Junior Andrew Lelik closed the gap to 12-9 at 126 pounds with a 10-4 decision over Tucker Minnoe.
Freshman Jacob Shipman gave Newark Valley the lead for good, at 15-12, with a 8-second fall at 132 pounds.
Sophomore Leland Houston, senior Logan Rhodes, and senior Michael Wandell registered consecutive second-period pins at 138, 144, and 150 pounds, respectively, to give the Cardinals a commanding, 33-12 lead.
Senior Marcos Escalante kept the train rolling for the Cardinals with a 16-7 major decision of Levi McDonald at 157 pounds, and senior Cadin Creeley capped the NV run at 165 pounds with a 37-second fall to seal the victory and up the lead to 43-12.
After Moravia earned a fall at 175 pounds, NV won the final three weight classes — with senior Titus Callahan and junior Jack Blomberg receiving forfeits at 190 and 285 pounds, respectively, sandwiched around a second-period fall by junior Wyatt Dillon at 215 pounds.
Newark Valley hosts the Larry Goodrich Invitational this weekend.
