WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Newark Valley grad Trevor Middendorf, a freshman on the SUNY Brockport wrestling team, finished third in his weight class Saturday at the Wilkes Invitational.

Middendorf, seeded seventh in the 125-pound bracket, opened his day with a 9-3 decision over Misericordia's Jaydin Barreto.

Middendorf scored a first-period takedown, and led 3-1 heading into the second period, where he recorded two more takedowns to take a 9-3 lead.

In the round-of-16, Middendorf registered a pair of late takedowns to rally for a wild, 17-16, decision over McDaniel's Romeo Tsai, who scored three takedowns in the first period to build a 9-2 lead with 1:07 remaining.

After an escape, Middendorf notched a takedown to close gap to 9-6, but Tsai escaped with 6 seconds remaining in the opening stanza to take a 10-6 lead.

Tsai escaped and scored a takedown in the first 32 seconds of the second period to extend his lead to 14-6, but Middendorf answered with an escape and takedown to pare the lead down to 14-10.

Tsai finished off the period with an escape to take a 15-10 lead into the final two minutes.

After a quick escape, Middendorf scored a takedown with 1:25 remaining to close the gap to 15-14.

After a Tsai escape, Middendorf scored the winning takedown with 41 seconds remaining, then rode out Tsai to secure the win.

In the quarterfinals, Middendorf knocked second-seed Deven Jackson of Elizabethtown, 6-5.

After giving up a first-period takedown, Middendorf scored a takedown late in the second period to take a 5-3 lead, but Jackson scored an escape before the second-period horn to trim the deficit to 5-4.

Jackson scored an escape with 25 seconds left in the bout to tie the score at 5-5, but Middendorf was awarded a riding-time point for the win.

In the semifinals, Middendorf dropped an 11-5 decision to third-seeded Aidan Carmody of The College of New Jersey.

Carmody scored a pair of takedowns to take a 6-1 lead after the first three minutes, then scored another 3-pointer in the second period to extend his lead to 9-2.

Middendorf registered a takedown with 20 seconds left in the third period, but an escape and riding-time point provided the final margin.

In the third-place match, Middendorf put on a takedown clinic in a 21-5 technical fall of Phil Montes of Misericordia in 5:16.

Middendorf registered two takedowns in the first period to take a 6-2 lead, then scored four more in the second period to extend his lead to 18-5.

Middendorf ended the match just 16 seconds into the third period with his seventh takedown.

Middendorf is 7-3 on the season, with five of his wins coming via technical fall.

Brockport, which won the team title at the Wilkes Invitational, returns to action Saturday at the New York State Championships at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse.
