JOHNSON CITY — The Owego defense continues to put forth solid efforts, this time blanking Johnson City in a 20-0 Section IV Division III shutout here Friday night.
The River Hawks’ victory, coupled with Maine-Endwell’s 50-12 win over Norwich, seals up the Class B No. 3 seed for Owego.
It took the offense a while to find the end zone, but Stefano Scherrer scored the only points the River Hawks would need with his two-yard run up the middle at 4:01 of the second quarter. Dylan Brace’s PAT kick made it 7-0.
Owego would not score again until 5:09 of the third period when Brace broke through the defense for a 23-yard touchdown run. His PAT made it 14-0.
The defense showed its prowess in the fourth quarter when Sam Sherwood stepped in front of a pass and returned it 23 yards for a TD with 6:41 remaining. The PAT kick failed.
Owego (5-3) hosts Horseheads (6-2) next Saturday at 1 p.m. for its Senior Recognition game. The River Hawks are ranked 19th in the state in Class B while the Blue Raiders are an honorable mention in Class A.
