SPENCER — Seventh-grader Maddy Gentile scored a career-high four goals to lead SVEC to an 8-0 win over Newark Valley on Senior Night in Section IV, field hockey action.
"Tonight was a must win for us in order to make sectional play," said SVEC field hockey coach Abby Gentile. "We controlled the ball really well and took advantage of scoring opportunities.
"We were celebrating our lone senior Kaylee Kastenhuber tonight, and the team stepped up to help her get a win on Senior Night, added Gentile.
Junior Kendall Gentile scored two goals and had one assist, and sophomore Hayden Gehres added one goal and one assist for SVEC.
The Eagles score three goals — two by Maddy Gentile, sandwiched around one by Kendall Gentile — in less than 3 1/2 minutes in the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead after the opening stanza.
Kendall Gentile, off an assist from Gehres, scored midway through the second quarter to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Gehres, off a feed from Kendall Gentile, scored midway through the third quarter, and Maddy Gentile completed her hat trick about 3 1/2 minutes later to extend the lead to 6-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
Eighth-grader Rylee Silvernail scored her first varsity goal early in the fourth quarter to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead, and Maddy Gentile capped the scoring with 3:08 remaining in the contest.
Newark Valley had a 23-0 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 13-0 edge on penalty corners.
Ashleen Callahan recorded 15 saves in the cage for the Cardinals.
SVEC, now 6-9, closes out the regular season Thursday when it hosts Sidney.
