HS CROSS COUNTRY: NEWARK VALLEY GIRLS FINISH IN TOP 5 AT HOME INVITATIONAL (2025-10-11)

NEWARK VALLEY — The Newark Valley girls cross country team captured fifth-place honors at the Bob Greene/ Newark Valley Invitational here Friday.

The lady Cardinals scored 143 points and trailed only Pennsylvania-based Abington Heights (50) and Elk Lake (58), Owego (75) and Elmira (127).

Eighth-grader Hadley Merrill and senior Brook Illsley finished in the top 20 with Merrill placing 14th with a time of 21:32.2 and Illsley logging a 21:41.7, good for 17th.

Senior Olivia Vaughn placed 38th in 24:06.5, sophomore Leah Lansing was 50th, clocking 24:41 and senior Emily LaPorte rounded out the team scoring in 54th with a time of 25:15.6.

Also competing for NV were Elle Webb 10 Newark Valley (56th, 25:30.2), Malerie Gregrow 11 Newark Valley (57th, 25:32.7), Abigail Escalante 11 Newark Valley (59th, 25:44.4) and Savannah Beebe 12 Newark Valley (62nd, 25:59).

The boys team took 11th with 262 points. Elk Lake ran away with the team title, scoring 38 points while claiming the top three individual positions.

Senior Marcos Escalante led the Cardinals, placing 43rd with a time of 19:10.6. Sophomore Leland Houston took 45th in 19:33.2. Junior Camden King was 59th with a 20:12.8, sophomore Rhyley Payne came in 69th in 20:33.6 and 8th-grader Sheldon Houston was 75th at 20:55.3.

NV’s other runners included junior Andrew Lelik (99th, 23:18.5), senior Hunter Tyrrell 12 Newark Valley(105th, 23:41.7), sophomore Reese Illsley 10 Newark Valley (106th, 23:54.3) and sophomore Rex Chapman 10 Newark Valley (109th, 24:17.9).
